Sometimes one wants to be in the thick of it, yet slightly removed. A cable car ride away from Powell and Market or the Wharf is Frascati, a bistro with a menu inspired by Mediterranean flavors. The tiny dining room is packed and redolent of onions, balsamic glazes and other enticing flavors from a revolving menu that offers Russet Potato Gnocchi with peas, parmesan and white truffle oil, Maple Leaf Duck Breast with mâche-fennel salad and for dessert, Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta. A quick jaunt upstairs at the back of the restaurant leads to a tight mezzanine with multiple tables, with but one for two that is a bit set off by itself. While eating there one can easily watch the chefs pull it all together in the open kitchen below, and still spy the street scene on Hyde. The service here is impeccable and solicitous of romantic duos.
