It’s not often one can sit outside in San Francisco on a warm, windless patio and watch private sailboats docking near parked tour boats. But that’s the case with La Mar, a Peruvian seafood restaurant at Pier 1.5, where Table 908 puts you in the corner closest to the water action, glassed in to waist height and overlooking both locals jogging by or eating takeout lunches on the dock below. With chairs facing the Bay and a string of hanging flower pots stuffed with petunias and other perennials, nautical flags fluttering, it’s one of the more enticing and unusual views of Yerba Buena Island and the Bay. The food here will satisfy the greediest seafood hound, with an extravagant choice of delicately sauced ceviches to share, perfectly portioned meat and fish skewers and delicate desserts like passion fruit mousse layered with raspberry compote, chocolate mousse and almond praline. The Pisco Sours go down easy in this romantic setting. And if Table 908 is not available, there are multiple tables in a row along the deck that are almost as perfect.
