When dining on John Ash & Co.’s patio at Table 72, you’re just steps from a vineyard, and can watch families of quail, or on occasion young jack rabbits jetting about under the vines. The patio may be busy, but this table feels secluded as your back is to other diners and any chitchat fades in favor of savoring the sculpted beauty of the acres of vines stretching out in front of you. The patio is set up to enjoy cooler seasons, too, with multiple heat lamps, accordion glass windows, potted flowers and lights strung on beams. Executive chef Thomas Schmidt cranks out classic California fare like Hog Island Oysters, Dungeness Crab Fritters and Zinfandel Braised BN Ranch Beef Short Ribs in this award-winning restaurant owned by Don and Rhonda Carano, of FerrariCarano Vineyards and Winery. Locals love John Ash & Co.; it won The Press Democrat’s award for “Best Restaurant for a Romantic Meal” in 2014.
